Summer is quickly approaching! The seasonal temperature extremes of Nashville means that local residents rely heavily on air conditioning systems. Whether an AC window unit, mini-split, central or zoned cooling system – Moonlight HVAC and Nightscapes has your back with a helpful AC summer checklist. Help minimize HVAC emergencies and ensure your residential AC system is up for the task with this punch list!

Is My AC System Ready For Hot Summer Temperatures of Nashville?

Check & Replace Air Filter

Dirty and old air filters are one of the most common culprits of AC issues. An easy and affordable do it yourself option – air filters are essential to airflow, energy consumption and air quality. Buy a few at once and keep them for future requirements!

Dependent on the type of AC system at a residential property, air filters can exist at vent openings and main cooling units. Dirty filters help catch air contaminants and can build up with dust, dander and pet hair. Check the air filter quarterly and more frequently with dogs or cats on premises.

Clean Exterior AC Unit

The Exterior AC unit may also have an air filter. Over time, these air filters become clogged with exterior debris and air contaminants. Air filters act like a trap to air particulates and negatively impacts AC unit airflow. Resulting in efficiency loss and higher energy consumption.

Remove any vegetation that impedes on the AC unit. Overgrown grass and vegetation can constrict airflow. Ensure a two foot buffer zone exists around the AC unit for proper functionality.

Clean AC units and coils to help extend the longevity of air conditioning units.

Inspect Unit For Interior & Exterior Damage

Vegetation, tree limbs, extreme temperatures and weather conditions can cause exterior and interior damage to central cooling systems.

Interior and exterior damage may cause capacitor impacts, damage to condenser coils, refrigerant leaks and motor failure. In some instances – thermostat problems can occur from the damage.

When homeowners or property managers suspect interior or exterior damage of an air conditioning system – it’s to best to contact an HVAC expert for a professional inspection.

Seal Leaks

Existing duct work for central air conditioning systems can crack and leak. When this occurs, the cold air ends up within the interior of the walls instead of the desired rooms. In turn causing additional energy consumption and higher electric bills.

Test Cooling System

After all components of a mini split, window unit or central cooling system and ductwork is complete – the air conditioning system needs to be tested. After testing is complete, an HVAC technician ensures all components are functioning properly and in good and safe working condition.
